Bobble galore

Crocheting a cowl, while being all snuggled up in blankets.
Another in between project... I have so many wips... As per usual!
And no, I haven't finished my Giant Granny Square yet, but almost, yes.

And again colours you're not really used of me...

I have a bit of a crush on bobble stitches recently.
Can you tell...?

I never really liked variegated yarn, until recently.
(Usually I don't make a sample either - I just start something new.)
It's funny how the same pattern looks quite different with other yarn.

Anyway, I frogged this sample last week.

How do you feel about variegated yarn? Love or hate,
or maybe just neutral...?

  1. I don’t like variegated yarn either.
I like to see the structure of the crochet and when you use variegated yarn the structure gets hidden.
The lighter the yarn the better the structure is noticeable.
So I can imagine that you like the almost snow white variegated yarn you show here.

  2. It depend really on the project. I have to LOVE it to use it though. If I don't love it I won't use it. I just finished a lovely crochet shawl today! It is huge!

  7. Like you I'm not such a fan but gave recently bought to skeins so will see if it changes my mind. I'm completely inove with mustard yarn at the moment though and love that bobble stitch xoxo

  8. Like all the others I´m not a fan of the yarn. But to be honest this little sampler you made is quite nice. Love the muted earth colours.
I do like the mustard colour though. I bought a beautiful woolen scarf in that colour last year at Avoca and that started my love affair with this colour. I came acros a big bag of chunky cotton yarn in a charity shop and made a granny blanket wit it. Still one of my favorites.
Your cowl looks so comfy with all the bobbles. Nice and warm. Looking forward to see the end result.

  9. Mmm...I'm slowly developing a like in the bobble stitch look...
I like some variegated yarns. Depending what you want to do. I've seen some beautiful granny stripes. But I do think it actually knits up prettier, in stocking stitch.

  10. The variegated yarn js fun to use as it's an ungoing surprise what colour is going to appear and how it will look! I just love love the variegated yarn you used in combination with the bobble stitch! Could you tell me which it is? Thanks!

  11. I LOVE your cowl! The colour and bobbles are perfect. I seem to be loving that colour at the moment, and it's such a change from what I usually go for. I am also with you an the varigated yarn. I used to LOATHE that kind of yarn. It conjured up rubbishy 1970's badly fitted jumpers! It's only in the last year or so that I've actually purchased yarn like that. Has to be in the lightest colourways too to make it work for me. the bobbles look good in it though.

    Have a super week!

  14. I like both, but for the variegated yarn (I have the same yarn as you have) it depends on the stitches and the project. Your work looks lovely, the yellow is stunning.

  15. I've still to try out the bobble stitch, the yellow looks nice and fun. I've only ever used variegated yarn for making hats for some reason! the last wool would make a nice hat! Heather x

  17. I think that Bobble Stitches are just fun to make and amusing to look at. As for varigated or varigating yarns, I think that they do better in knitting than in crocheting. Knitting gives you opportunities to made subtle connections, blending varies with solids. Crocheting (as I think of it) is more Off or On, don't mix with Mr. In Between sort of thing.

Still...I have made some pretty good hats using combinations of varigated yarns that seemed to benefit from that spiralling round and round process. Watch the colors come and go, if you get my drift.

Come to think of it, I think I have some varigated yarn somewhere around here right now that I could use for some sort of warm and cozy hat for winter 2013.

Thank you for the inspiration. Popcorn/bobble crochet stitches are great for definition and shaping when making hats.

  19. Hoi Haafner,

    Fijn weekend!

  20. Haafner are you still alive?!!!! Mmmm must be hooking up a storm I suppose. I love your bobbles and have been wanting to do bobbles for ages now, I just fear the volumes of yarn needed. Do you use more yarn than usual? I am not a fan of old fashioned variegated yarns but absolutely the latest versions and especially enjoy what people do with it (different patterns really bring out different aspects of variegated yarn). Have you seen all the gorgeous wool Niebieska Chata work with? I really enjoy the muted colours of your skein of yarn too!

  21. Love the yellow color in your cowl. You shoud wear it with grey; those 2 colors match perfectly.
I like varigated, but prefer it Batik style

  23. I have never been a fan of variegated, however, there are a lot of beautiful yarns out there now that aren't garish like they once were in the 80s and 90s. I would try my hnd at variegated earth or muted pastel tones.
